How Star Wars and Case Studies Can Boost Membership

SPOILER ALERT – if you haven’t seen the new Star Wars movie, Rogue One, go watch it, then come back and read this.

When I went to go see Rogue One in theatres recently, I wasn’t too excited. I had pretty low expectations. Then I saw it. I loved it. Dare I say I liked it more than The Force Awakens? Well, I did.

 

You see, The Force Awakens was new. It was basically all new. New people, new plot line, new humor. Yeah, you could argue that they still had some of the originals in it – Luke, Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Han Solo (until they mercilessly killed him off) – but it was still…different.  

 

Why did I like Rogue One more? Because it was more Star Wars-y. It had those “ah-ha” moments! It was the backstory.

 

And people love a good backstory. We love to hear anything rags-to-riches, “local kid makes good,” success stories about our favorite people.

 

And guess what? Showing people success stories can boost your sales too. That’s why we use testimonials. They prove that success happened.

 

If you want a step up from a testimonial – then try a case study. Here’s an example. Let’s say your gym is for surfers, and helps them train for professional and recreational surfing.

 

Here’s how you would use this:

 

Your marketing plan involves sending out an email series with 4-5 emails. The goal is to get them to click a link that takes them to a landing page that sells a membership to your gym.

 

One of those emails is a case study. It’s about Matt. Matt had always dreamed of being a professional surfer. He worked out at home and surfed every day. But he wanted to kick it up a notch. So he joined your gym, “The Surf Gym.” Every day, after surfing, his trainer would help him workout, stretch, and train more effectively than ever before. Just 3 months later, Matt got in to a surf competition…and won.

 

Ba-bam. When people read that, they think – wow, I want to be like Matt. I need to join this gym. It makes them feel good. Then they buy. Ka-ching.

 

That’s how powerful a case-study can be. Use them. Make money. Change lives. Do it today.
